You know those gender reveals on Instagram where dad pops a balloon and blue confetti goes everywhere and mom jumps up and down but you’re secretly wondering if it was actually her lifelong dream to have seven boys (and also surprised she can still jump up and down sans Depends). Well once a year The PANTONE Color Institute does basically that. For 9 months (total coincidence?), a group of trend watchers scan various industry’s high-profile events and compare notes until one color emerges victorious and is dramatically revealed as the PANTONE Color of the Year.
“Suggestive of the sky at dusk, the reassuring qualities of the thought-provoking PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue highlight our desire for a dependable and stable foundation,” reports The PANTONE Color Institute. I’m sorry but when is the sky ever this color at dusk? They would’ve done better to say it’s the color of your text messages as long as no one in the group thread owns a freaking Android. The color of Cookie Monster’s greedy little paws, Marge Simpson's hair, your laptop‘s screen of death after a 4-hour mandatory Windows update, Smurfette’s thicc fingers, Elvis’s suede shoes, even the Facebook logo for Zuck(erberg)'s sake. The sky… pshhhh.

Dear Guys In Our Lives,
Thank you for hovering as we open our Christmas gifts to catch any shred of tissue paper before it hits the floor. Sorry that the children wanted to buy you matching pajamas. Also sorry that I posted the resulting picture on Instagram. Sorry that you've been surviving off of leftover soup and cookies for four days. I have some good news though. SAVINGS. No, no, we aren't getting rid of the kids (although let's be honest, at least #3 is definitely not going to be accepted by any colleges). The Nordstrom half-yearly sale is happening. And I've picked out some stylish pieces to head into 2020 since you only got socks and underwear for Christmas. Now please throw away that flannel with the holes in it.
Let's get geeky with sweater fabric facts. Wool comes from sheep, merino wool comes from a specific species called Merino sheep that originated from Spain, and alpaca is harvested from... you guessed it, alpacas. There is no animal cruelty associated with modern shearing of these animals. Wool is carefully shorn from live sheep by sheep shearers, who cut the wool off using electric clippers. The wool is scoured, and lanolin, the natural oils that sheep secrete, which act as a waterproof raincoat for the sheep, is extracted from the wool and used for other purposes.
Traditional wool has thick, coarse fibers and is not intended to be worn directly on the skin as these rough fibers can cause itching. However, merino wool is known for its thinner, finer fibers and is meant to be worn next to the skin. These soft, non-itchy fibers help your skin breathe while still insulating your body. Lightweight merino is perfect for a broad range of temperatures and climates. Alpaca is a durable, luxurious fiber that is softer and silkier than wool. Unlike wool fibers, alpaca fibers do not contain lanolin, which makes these fibers hypoallergenic. I've included my stylist picks for merino wool and alpaca sweaters below - all on sale!
Denim fun fact: Paige Adams-Geller was the first female founder in the premium denim industry. She got her start as one of the top fit models in the industry, then launched PAIGE in 2004. PAIGE denim is designed with a special fabric known as "Transcend," which uses fiber technology to create a 4-way stretch and luxuriously soft feel. The company partners with the best wash-houses in the country, in Los Angeles. Every style created is wear-tested. I've included a few pairs on sale below.
We've entered that period between Christmas and New Year's. It's like middle aged cleavage. When we lie down, there seems to be an expansive gap that's good for nothing, but we don't really feel like putting on a bra. Time may not really exist. We can't remember if we've been wearing this sweatshirt for two days or three. Can we skip going to the grocery store since we have cookies to last for at least eight meals? Should we watch 180 more YouTube videos? I've got four words for you. NORDSTROM. HALF. YEARLY. SALE. Or is it three words? Is there a hyphen in there? Who cares? You have five days left to get the best deals of the year literally without leaving your bed. Start here with my stylist picks...
Environmental sustainability refers to preserving our environment and natural resources. In the apparel industry, this may include lowering water consumption to make fabric, refraining from usage of non-toxic dyes, using energy-efficient appliances in factories, or recycling textiles and eliminating packaging waste to lower our carbon footprint.
Social sustainability refers to meeting the needs of not only a business's employees but also supporting the ability of future generations to maintain a healthy community. This pillar encompasses human rights, corporate governance, fair wages, maternity and paternity benefits, safe work environments, and development opportunities for employees. It also includes ways to give back and invest in its local community. These three pillars are interdependent on one another. For instance, if a company minimizes packaging waste, their supplies may cost less, thus boosting the business's profitability and economic sustainability. Reinventing processes in the $2.5 trillion fashion industry doesn't come quickly or easily, but many companies are making strides to improve their social and environmental impact while balancing economic sustainability. H&M is focused on paying fair wages and creating eco-conscious fabrics. Fun fact: In the Netherlands, H&M teamed up with Fietskoeriers.nl, a company that delivers packages via bicycle, to decrease carbon dioxide emissions. What a wheely great way to break the cycle! Madewell is focused on certified fair trade factories, repurposing clothing, and equal pay for women. I mean I’m not sure why we ever got paid less just because we have organs responsible for creating - you know - JUST THE ENTIRE HUMAN RACE, but let’s applaud those trying to fix it. Do well tip: Take your old jeans into a Madewell store to get $20 off new jeans (even jeans on sale). The company will repurpose your pre-loved denim as housing insulation for organizations like Habitat for Humanity. DL1961 has completely reinvented how they make their denim, using biodegradable fibers, drastically reducing water usage, and eliminating chemical abrasives. Get this: The average pair of jeans uses approximately 1500 gallons of water in production. Insane, right? DL1961 has watered this down (literally) to a mere 8 gallons per pair of jeans. Some ways that you can help support sustainable efforts (whether you're a boomer or not) are to shop brands that are making a difference for our planet and communities, take along reusable bags when shopping, and donate your pre-loved clothing. |
